Church libraries can be vibrant
centers for nurturing and supporting people of all ages. Many are
striving to stay current with materials--and voices--that intrigue
and equip or inspire children, youth, and families today. Some are
moving beyond their rooms and walls to make their ministries more
visible and active. They are stocking book and resource carts in
the narthex and fellowship hall with samples of resources that
reflect the text or theme for the day. Others provide ongoing or
periodic display tables with specific resources for lend or
purchase, such as print and/or electronic resources for children,
youth, or adults. Partnerships with Augsburg Fortress and other
publishers give congregations the opportunity to provide new
resources on reasonable consignment.
Many church libraries have expanded
their offerings to include multi-media resources; including, CDs,
videos, DVDs, and computer programs for members of all ages. Some
have budgets to purchase these resources and include them in their
lending service. Many others have created a rental program to
provide a financial base for purchasing new titles.
Though Davey and Goliath became
known as characters on a children’s television series that was
produced by the Lutheran Church in the 1950s and ’60s, they are
timeless in their ability to relate to engage children in
adventures that interpret faith and values for daily living. These
characters can be used to promote your congregation’s interest in
nurturing literacy among children and their families.
Consider the following steps to
include Davey and Goliath as kid-friendly partners in this
ministry.
- Browse through the
history to become more
familiar with Davey and Goliath as a media ministry.
- Look through a listing and
description of all the
episodes and become familiar with the
characters who made each
program memorable and meaningful.
- Check out the
Davey and Goliath online store for videos and DVDs that
are currently available for purchase.
- Decide if you’d like to create a
video lending library.
- Promote new resources and
programs through your congregation’s bulletin, newsletter, and
the community newspaper.
- Consider providing story times
with video presentations of one or more episodes. The video
packages used as supplements for Camp
Creation (Augsburg Fortress Vacation Bible School
program for 2004) provide brief excerpts and great introductions
to several episodes.
Other Options:
- Associate the personalities of
Davey and Goliath with your library to promote its usage by
children and families. Create visuals using the outlines from
the clip art file.
If you wish to display large or life-size representations of
either character, you can download and reproduce the graphic on a
transparency. Then use an overhead projector to enlarge the
design and trace it onto poster board or newsprint. Add color
with markers or paints. Or have the youth group do it!
- Sponsor a children’s reading
program, using Davey and Goliath as key promoters. You might
purchase stickers or other memorabilia to be prizes or rewards
for reading. Check out the
online bookstore.
- Regularly submit articles and
notices to your congregation's newsletter to promote resources
for children and their families. You might invite children to
“Come -n- Join the Gang “ as you highlight some of Davey and
Goliath’s Clubhouse Favorites.
